What Is a Belief?

Belief is an opinion exists in the depth of our essence. A belief specifies the rightness or wrongness of a matter. When we believe in something, we don’t need to check its accuracy. This means that a belief is something that we have admitted its accuracy without any discussion.

An important question asked about the beliefs and types of beliefs is that whether it is possible to classify beliefs into two groups of good and bad beliefs.

What Is a Belief

Is it possible to classify the beliefs into two right and wrong beliefs?

To answer this question, we again draw your attention to the definition of belief aforementioned in the last part. A belief is something correct and accurate in any person’s view and there is no need to prove its accuracy. With regards to this definition, any belief is correct from everybody’s point of view; meanwhile this belief may be incorrect in the other person’s viewpoint. This point of view is a type of belief, too.

Now, we can investigate the classification of belief types better. What is evident is that beliefs cannot be categorized into two correct and incorrect beliefs; because every belief is correct in its owner’s idea. Everybody else could have a belief in contrary to that belief and this is correct in its owner’s view, too. Here, this question may be raised: what is truth? You may say the correct belief is one which is closer to truth.

To answer this question, we should ask: what is the truth? Could human find the truth of every subject? Due to different reasons including human’s limited science, it is impossible to achieve truth, i.e. the essence of every event. What exists in human’s mind about truth is reality, not truth. Reality means what happened from our perspective and our perspective is far from the truth.

How should we classify types of beliefs?

From NLP perspective, beliefs are categorized into two types of contributory beliefs and restrictive beliefs. As it is clear from its name, contributory beliefs are those beliefs which help people in life path to achieve success and targets. Restrictive beliefs are those beliefs that inhibit human’s progress and goal achievement.

NLP’s Views about Types of Beliefs

From NLP’s perspective, a belief cannot be permanently classified in either contributory group or restrictive group. But rather depending on different situations, any belief could be in each contributory or restrictive groups.

We clarify this issue by an example. Suppose that a person believes that working in Iran will not have any desirable results. Beside this belief, he has another belief that working in America can bring about progress and improvement. Now, which type of beliefs do these two beliefs belong to?

Depending on the situation and condition of the person, we decide that in which group these two beliefs fit. If the person with these beliefs lives in Iran, both of these beliefs are restrictive for him. But if he lives in America, both beliefs are contributory for him.

How do contributory beliefs and restrictive beliefs are replaced with each other?

If such a person travels to America, the belief of improvement in America is changed from a restrictive belief into a contributory belief; because he can progress in America with this belief. This means the existence of such a belief help the person to spend his power and energy on finding the methods to progress in America.

While he had the same belief in Iran (the belief of progress¬), he could spend his energy and power on finding the methods for prosperity in Iran. Anyway, when someone believes in something, he proceeds in the direction of his beliefs and he doesn’t need to prove the correctness of his belief or argue about it.

Now that you got familiar with NLP’s views towards types of beliefs, try to identify your contributory beliefs and your restrictive beliefs, maintain your contributory beliefs to progress in your work and life and change your restrictive beliefs into contributory beliefs.
