How Information Is Processed Through NLP Techniques

One of the commonalities between humans and artificial intelligence is information processing. The quicker the speed process is the sooner the solution is found. Professor Georg Miller, a US based psychologist and cognitive scientist, researched into this subject and concluded how much information people can process at a given time.

He concluded that each person can process 7±2 bits of information. This means if the person is in a good mood and interested in the subject can receive 9 bits of information otherwise they can store 5 bits of information in their mind.

Information Processing and Conscious Mind

Our conscious mind only records a small percentage of the mass of information coming our way and just holds the needed amount of it for survival. Every seconds equals millions bits of information which human mind is not capable of processing that whole amount of information. Therefor we all are constantly filtering the information in order to stay healthy and we do it before our mind starts processing.

Information Processing and Conscious Mind

This is the way you perceive the external reality through your senses, in addition this process is affected by all of your pervious experiences. The way in which external reality stimuli are transformed into internal images fall into three stages of deletion, distortion and generalization.

These three are not just for receiving information but they are also frequently used when communicating and expressing ideas. In fact the speaker has the complete and precise meaning of what they’re going to say but do not express it completely.

As mentioned earlier that every person has the complete and precise meaning of what they’re going to say which is unconscious is called deep structure in NLP. However in order to communicate faster and more clearly the deep structure is shorten therefore what is expressed is called the surface structure.

If the deep structure was not shorten it would take far too long to say anything. To get from deep structure to surface structure, our unconscious minds use three processes. These language processes are the essential way of survival.

First Stage Of Information Processing; Deletion

Deletion is done when you are focused enough on some certain sensory information received and therefore ignore other stimuli’s .

Second Stage Of Information Processing; Distortion

Distortion is done when misinterpret the information received through your senses and make meaning out of it which is not necessary true.

Third Stage Of Information Processing; Generalization.

Generalization is done when you make general conclusion about a specific experience and consider it true for other similar situations and expect the same result. to generalize is to consider several items as representing the entire group.

Generalization are usually expressed with the following words which they don’t accept any exception.

  • All
  • Any
  • Always
  • Never
  • None

People do not always say or express what they really mean. They leave some information out, change it or generalize the point to a larger group.
